Advanced practice nurses utilize varied philosophical viewpoints during their encounters with groups, family or a patient. Whereas initially nursing founded its practice on positivist views such as the ones prescribed by Nightingale, the view point has become post-positivist in the contemporary practice. As such, the two major philosophical foundations in nursing include received and perceived views. According to Warelow (2014), the received view has acted as nursing’s guiding paradigm and several authors describe it as empirical positivism’s label. The received view philosophy thus combines logic with the objectives of empiricism in the establishment of scientific theories. In this philosophy, validity, quantification, measurement, objectivity, and reductionism act as the central tenets and as reflected in the medical model, they are task-oriented. As such, they strongly impact the way that nursing care and practice has been done. On the other hand, the perceived view is a post-positivism philosophy that founds its theoretical constructions related to nursing on alternative methods that accepts multiple realities, tradition, history, intuition, subjectivity, and values (Hirani, Richter, & Salami, 2018). Further, the philosophy maintains certain scientific knowledge and it calls evidence-based practice.

congruence with nursing as it contains a compassionate commitment to human beings as well as addressing the illness of a patient instead of just the pathology/diagnosis (Nikfarid, Hekmat, Vedad, & Rajabi, 2018). In other words, just like the perceived view philosophy, the reciprocal worldview calls for holistic care in nursing wherein a nurse focuses on not only the disease but the patient’s spiritual and cultural wellbeing.  For instance, a nurse would share their spiritual experience with the patient with an aim to being available to them during the entire care process. By doing this, a nurse does not only treat the pathology but also the spiritual wellbeing of the patient.
