Learning Objectives for Midterm Exam
The midterm exam will be given on Friday, May 8. It is open book and open notes, and will last
55 minutes.

NRNP 6640-14 Midterm Exam Learning Objectives

To succeed on the midterm exam, you should be able to:
1. Balance combustion reactions involving arbitrary fuels, oxidizers, and stoichiometries.
You should be able to find expected concentrations of species in the products, or to use
measured concentrations to find the stoichiometry.
2. Set up and solve first law problems around reacting systems, including finding heat losses
when given product composition and temperature, or the product temperature given the
heat loss.
3. Express the rate at which chemistry takes place in terms of rate constants and reactant
concentrations for arbitrary reaction mechanisms. Develop combined rate constant
expression via the steady-state assumption for reactive intermediates.
4. Analyze a situation to determine whether an explosion will take place. Describe the
general features associated with an explosion.
5. Apply the simple hydrodynamic theory of premixed reaction waves (detonations and
deflagrations) to calculate features associated with the wave (e.g., velocity, pressure
change).
6. Use simple premixed flame theory to identify how flame speed changes with initial
conditions, and how the flame shape and angle responds to local velocity.
To summarize, you can’t do too much in terms of detailed calculations on a 55 minute exam, so
you should expect problems that capture the essential underlying ideas/theory, but which are
simple enough to be done in the time available. Thus, the emphasis is on what underlies each of
the major topics…where did the ideas come from and how are they applied
